Why Fringe Voice?
Seth Godin has become one of my favorite reads- I enjoy his books and his blog.

This is a Great line from one of his recent blog posts: No, the stuff that changes everything starts on the fringe, captures the imagination of a dozen, who bring along colleagues or friends, and then it's a hundred and then...

Yup!
I work as a public school administrator and am blessed to work in a great community surrounded by a fantastic staff and wonderful students.   However, K-12 public education is on the fringe, there is work to be done.  In golf, the area around the green is known as the fringe.  The fringe is a better spot to be than some alternatives, but not ideal.

When a ball is on the green, a golfer has one type of shot- a putt.  When a ball is one the fringe, a golfer might use any number of different clubs and shot types to try to get the ball close to the hole.  The first decision is between a safe shot- one unlikely to go in, but also unlikely to be totally mishit; or a riskier shot- one with a better chance to go in or get close, but also with a greater risk of failure.

Early in a round of golf, most golfers will choose the safe shot.  There are more variables as one gets to the later holes.  Most importantly:  Am I ahead or behind?

Education is not as neatly defined as a round of golf, but I believe we are at a point where we need to be willing to play a risky shot.  We need to consider the kinds of options that give us a chance to make the shot.  In order to do that, we need to be willing to focus on things like Mass Customized Learning.

“Organizations that destroy the status quo win.”  Seth Godin

“Visions, to be powerful, must run well ahead of the organization’s present capacity to do them. “  Tom Peters

More to come.
